Depending on the type of Internet service you subscribe to, you may be getting a static or dynamic IP address from your ISP. A static IP address is a permanent (non-changing) IP address assigned to you. Most residential gateways and smartphones get a dynamic IP address from their ISP whenever they connect to the Internet.

In home networks, a gateway (or a router) is assigned a public IP address by the ISP and shares this address among all devices connected within the network. This article describes how to change your IP address when it is dynamically assigned via DHCP.

How Do I Change My IP Address?

Renewing your IP address from your current ISP may or may not result in a new IP. Depending on your connection method, you might need to reset your device:

  • If you connect via a router, you need to change your router’s IP address.
  • If you're directly connected via a layer-2 gateway, you'll have to change your computer's IP address.

Changing Your IP Address on a Router

A router connects multiple devices to the Internet and receives a public IP from your ISP. To change this IP:

  • Turn off your router: Turn it off for a minute and then back on. DHCP often reassigns the same IP, so you might have to try multiple times or leave it off overnight.
  • Reconnect via the Admin Interface: Many routers offer a reconnect option in their settings. Login to your router’s admin panel and look for a “Reconnect” or “Renew” button.

Changing Your IP Address on a Computer

If your computer connects directly to the Internet (without a router), you can change its public IP by:

  • Restarting your computer: Often, restarting a few times can force a new IP assignment.
